American Jewish Committee to Honor two Civic Leaders

Dallas civic leaders Dee and Charles Wyly will receive the 2001 Institute of Human Relations Award
next Monday evening. The award recognizes leadership and devotion to preserving America's
democratic heritage.
The Dallas chapter of the American Jewish Committee, whose mission is to advance religious, racial
and ethnic understanding worldwide, will present the award at a dinner at Hotel Adolphus.
Mr. and Mrs. Wyly have amassed a record of outstanding voluntarism for some of the area's most
important cultural and civic institutions.
Charles Wyly is vice chairman and co-founder of the Michaels Stores, Inc. arts and crafts retail chain
and a founder and former vice chairman of Sterling Software, Inc. before its sale to Computer
Associates International, Inc.
He is chairman of the board of Communities Foundation of Texas and of the advisory board of St.
Alcuin Montessori School.
Mr. Wyly is a past chairman of the Dallas advisory board of the Salvation Army and is currently a
member of the board of directors of the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts Foundation, Dallas
Museum of Art, Dallas Symphony Association, Dallas Theater Center, Southern Methodist
University's John Tower Center of Political Studies and Lakehill Preparatory School.
He has also served in leadership capacities with the United Way, Dallas Summer Musicals and TACA.
Mrs. Wyly is a board member of Kick Drugs Out of America and the Anderson Ranch Art Center in
Aspen, Colo.
She has also been active in Kidney Texas Inc., Dallas Arboretum, Nexus, Girls Inc. and the
Leadership Council for Brain Health at the University of Texas at Dallas. She is a member of the
Women's Auxiliary of the Salvation Army, Dallas Opera Guild and the Dallas Theater Center.
Co-chairs for the evening include Dennis R. Berman, Alan Feld, Alan N. Greenspan, Erle Nye, Idelle
G. Rabin and Deedie Rose.
Honorary chairs include Ruth Altshuler, Ebby Halliday and Juanita and Henry S. Miller Jr.
