Green Mountain Energy Joins Clean air Partners Program
August 2004
As part of its corporate commitment to sustainable business practices and focus on improving the
community, Green Mountain Energy Company is doing its part to help clean Central Texas air by
joining other area business leaders in the Clean Air Partners Program, an initiative of the CLEAN AIR
Force of Central Texas.
The program is designed to reduce ozone emissions and improve air quality in Central Texas through
a number of recommended activities, including transportation choices and energy efficiency.
“It's critical we do our part to have a positive impact in the communities we operate, and this is
particularly true for our corporate headquarters,” said Gillan Taddune, chief environmental officer of
Green Mountain Energy Company. “We also feel it's important to put our money where our mouth is
considering we sell a cleaner energy product to our customers nationwide who are making a similar
commitment to reduce their environmental footprint.”
Green Mountain Energy Company has already implemented a number of sustainable business
practices to reduce its impact on the Central Texas environment, including the following:
- The purchase of renewable energy certificates to offset a percentage of energy usage for its
corporate headquarters each year
- An employee offset program where employees purchase renewable energy certificates to offset
their home energy usage each year; in 2004, GMEC employees are responsible for the avoidance of
1.4 million pounds of CO2 from entering the air
- A commuter program that rewards employees for finding creative ways to get to work; this year,
the program has helped avoid 8,200 pounds of CO2
Additionally, as part of the Clean Air Partners Program, Green Mountain Energy Company is
committing to expanding its commute reduction activities, as well as investigate other actions it can
take to help to further reduce ozone- causing emissions and improve air quality in Central Texas and
will report on these efforts twice yearly.
“We are pleased to have a business like Green Mountain Energy Company on board with this
program since their entire mission – both to their employees and customers – is about helping clean
the air we all breathe,” said Wendy Willingham, Program Manager of Clean Air Partners. “We are
looking forward to Green Mountain Energy Company providing corporate leadership in helping other
Central Texas companies implement sustainable business initiatives.”
